Hi,

A few friends and myself live on the edge of a really rough area. We play footie on the local park their and know a lot of the local kids, most are decent enough although you get the odd one that likes to mouth off. Now these kids have nothing, no prospects other than to work in the local factory for the entire lives like their parents.

We are talking about setting up a small computer club in one of my friends outbuildings. Probably enough room for 20-25 PCs. It would be to teach these kids about computers, repairing and building them, using different software and maybe even building websites or programming.

We are willing to spend a little on software etc although between us we have quite a few legit versions of windows (ME onwards) or we can go the free way and use linux.

But there is no way we can afford enough PC equipment to get it going.

Does anyone know of anywhere that may provide good causes with old office PCs/monitors etc? Or a website that accepts old systems that are no longer worth anything?

sorry i cant give you practical advice on where , but is this not the type of worthy corse which your able to get lottery funding?

I'd imagine secondary schools (possibly independent ones or wealthier state schools) may help. Might have to wait till the beginning of the autumn term though.

Emailing the likes of IBM/Cisco or even firms like Goldman Sachs might be worth a try. They get through a lot of PC's and I'd imagine have schemes already in place towards helping urban development. I know Goldman Sachs are pretty good in London. You'd have to set yourselves up as a proper organisation of some sort to get formal funding from firms, lottery, council etc. which may be more than you want to do.

I think a lot of us could help on here by donating old components we never use now, im sure i have some old ram stick VGA cards sound cards and HD etc u can use for teaching them hardware upgrades etc..

Getting old CRT screens will be the one as they cost so much to ship. And i cant see many people giving away TFT's

But id be willing to send my old bits that just sit in *** cupboard as spares..
It was only a few weeks ago i threw bags of components i no longer use away. :(
