I'm looking at buying a pc that will last me several years as it seems everything is getting more expensive rather than the traditional way.

I've got an offer from a colleague at work for a mini ITX pc.

8700k, 16gb 4ghz ram, ITX board, NVME hard drive, with a GTX 1080TI (bought 3 months ago so warranty should be okay).

He wants 1,100 euros. I'm struggling to see what else I can build for this, but I'm aware there are new cards and chips available. Am I buying old tech or is it reasonable?

This will be running a 2560X1600 30" screen. Thanks!

Yes, I'd say it's good value, you'd certainly struggle to beat that buying new right now.

Yes the 1080ti will be fine for that display. I run a 1080 with a 1440p screen (Gsync) and that's perfect so your will be fine

That's a good buy although I would try and bring it down to a nice round 1000 euro's. :D The 8700k is a current cpu and is nearly £400 now, 16Gb of 4000mhz memory is over £200 and the cheapest 1080ti on here is £619 so I would say it's a very good deal.

Why is 8700K £400 now?

It's not just the 8700k. The i3 8100 is now £170 and the i5 8600k is now £300 (OCUK prices but most retailers have raised prices). These prices are just disgraceful. The reason is a supposed lack of supply and probably a certain amount of price gouging. To me it seems more like a move to make what is probably going to be very expensive new cpu's reasonably priced when they launch. I fully expect the 9700k to be around £450 and the 9900k to be £550-580.

I'm having second thoughts on the PC now. :(
I created a basket at overclockers with the following:

8700k £439.99
Gigabyte z370N-wifi £149.99
Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 ti £619.99
16gb 8x 2 Team group xtreem 8 pack 4000mhz £229.99

Del £10.50

Total : £1450.46

You can knock 100 off of the vastly inflated price of the 8700k if you shop around bringing the total to £1350.46.

Once you add cpu cooler, case, m.2, fans if needed depending on the case, and psu you are looking at £1600. Ish. Honestly it depends on the specific components he has picked but i've been conservative with my estimates. Expect it to be more, with the exception of the CPU which you can get for £100 cheaper elsewhere. So it probably balances out.

I would estimate you are saving a minimum of £500 (not euros) on the build, maybe upwards of £700 to £900 entirely dependant on what the specific components in his build are.

If he has an aio for the cpu, a different gpu, gskill ram, the asus z370 itx, any of the flashy itx cases; these all will push up my conservative estimate of the cost of his build today.

So it's a decent saving on what is essentially very relevant, current high end components. Whether it is worth it to you is for you to decide. Maybe you can find out what the specific components in the build are and price it out yourself.

Edit: i do think I've been aggressive and conservative with the prices of the extras to not inflate the savings but if anyone wants to correct me then please do. Bear in mind the asking price is in euros not pounds.
