Hi All, just wondered what you thought of these two builds, the first one is a 2nd hand offer, and the second is brand new.

Second Hand

Antec P182 Silver case 3x Antec tricool fans

Quad core Q6600 Kentsfield @ 3.1 ghz

Noctua NHU-12P Cooler with Noctua fan

Asus P5K-E wifi P35 chipset

HIS Radeon 4870 512mb GPU RV770

4gb Corsair Dominator CD8500 Ram 1066mhz with cooling fan

New Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB (I would buy this new)

Creative SB Audigy 2ZS soundcard

LG RAM DVD/RW

Samsung Syncmaster DVD/RW

Hiper Type M 580 watt PSU

Price ~£450

-

New

Xigmatek Asgard

AMD Phenom II 555 BE

Arctic Freezer Pro

785GMT Gigabyte mobo

OcUK Value 768mb GTX460

4GB Corsair XMS3

Seagate 7200.12 500GB

Samsung standard DVD-RW

Corsair CX400 PSU

~£450

Need opinions on which one would be better for gaming and some medium photoshop work. And is the 2nd hand deal good value for money? (I'm not all that knowledgable on computer parts' residuals)

I would probably be swayed towards the new on. Second hand one is okay, although id prefer it closer to £400 than the £450.

With the new I would swap the seagate for a samsung F3. The PSU is on the lower side of the wattage as well, for example I overclocked my GTX460 and the draw went to 380W. All be it this was with an i7 rig.

Cool, I thought 450 seemed a bit high, the only advantage I could see to the 2nd hand one was the sweet case.

The reason I went Seagate, is becasue I remember hearing about compatability issues between F3s and AMD boards (although that might have only been 8** series chipsets), can anyone confirm?

I won't be overclocking anything, as it's for someone else, and I don't want to be held responsible if it goes bang :p.

New.

But dont get the Xigmatek Asgard as it is a seriously terrible case.

Already got one for my main rig (in sig), and I love it, love it, love it. I really don't get the Asgard hate, for 26 quid, you can't argue.

Although in this build it'd likely be a stop gap until christmas when I'd buy an Antec P180 mini to house it.

ETA: let me guess, you'd recommend an Antec 300? :p

The price for the 2nd hand parts you've posted is seriously ovepriced.
I found it hard to go over 300-350 with those parts.

What would be a good deal tho, is get the 2nd spec but 2nd hand !
Good 785g mobo can be had for around 40-50quid.
CPU can be had for around 60 ( for around 90 you could source 955/965).
Good set of DDR3 is around 65-70.
4870 should be about 60.

Then get a new HDD, new PSU, new optical driver and 2nd hand case, good older age case can be had for as low as 30quid for a case with good features, just older models.

2nd hand cooler is a good idea as well.

You should have something in those lines:
785/790 mobo - 50
CPU - 50-90
GPU - 60
Case - 30-50
PSU - 60-70 ( new, decent quality modular )
HDD - new 33quid
DVD - 12
Cooler - 20-40
-----------------------------
315 to 390 depending on components, still a lot cheaper that what you've posted and better : ).

This looks like a really cool idea actually, although you did miss out RAM ;). With the price of 460s as they are I think one might be worth a punt, just wish OcUK would stop slowly creeping up the price of their value card... It was £117 3 days ago!
