I currently have a gaming pc setup in my loft and am wanting to add a 2nd pc for my son.

Current setup is one ethernet cable into the loft and neither pc has wifi adapters. Wondering whats the best way to go about providing internet to the 2nd pc. (Usb wifi adapter? Ethernet switch or splitter?)

is the best case to get a switch and run the two pcs off the one ethernet cable? Not sure on how switches work etc would be for gaming on both computers at the same time (current cable is cat 5e)

Cheers for any advice

A small unmanaged switch is the best option if you can run the cabling. You'll have absolutely no issues with both of you gaming over that. I have 5 machines connected to mine, one is a NAS which downloads most of the day at over 100mb/s and I play games while my misses is streaming downstairs and using her phone at the same time to watch videos on Instagram, what's a skill.

If not, personally id go for WiFi as a second option and get a WiFi card or dongle for each machine.

Lastly would be PoE plug adapters for the wall, I'm not a big fan of them, but I haven't used them for years, they might be better.

Add a little Netgear GS105 switch and a couple of patch cables, that will probably keep running for the next 30 years.
