2nd set of OCZ Plats failing on me

Long story short, my build has been working away nicely overclocked for 5 months untill I started getting BSODs about two weeks ago after returning from holidays. After a lot of LinXing I new there were problems when I was failing on the 2nd loop on 100% stock settings. Now running Memtest the RAM has had 3 identical errors in 4 passes.

The first set I had to RMA because it would not work past 1333Mhz and now this set seems to have died on me. At a loss as to what to do, as I really do not want another set of OCZ Plats :S, yet DDR3 prices are so much higher now that even if I can get a cash refund of £119, It won't get me much.

Any tips on the best/most reliable 1600Mhz DDR3 manufacturer atm that won't cost and arm and a leg?
 
I found 3x2gb of Corsair XMS3 to be fine in my old i7 build, and 4gb of it has been fine in my current i5 setup.

Think a lot of it is just bad luck really, as a recent set of Corsair Dominators' I bought for the i5 setup were found to be faulty.

G.Skill Ripjaws seem to have a decent reputation atm as well.

There's always Google to check and see if a particular brand has issues with a certain motherboard, bad batch, etc...
 
I had originally ordered that Patriot kit from OCUK but they messed up at the warehouse and as I did not want to wait for several weeks I ordered my RAM elsewere :S

Currently at Pass 5 with 4 errors. Reading :

badram=0xqqe3f7b8,0xfffffffc

Have not had much luck with OCZ recently, my first OCZ PSU died after a few months as well.

I used plat's ocz, nothing but crash's and memory related problems, rma'ed them and went corsair, never looked back since and all problems vanished instantly
 
The problem stems from the IC's used, not the company. Each company deals with chip manaufactures such as Micron and Elpida to name a couple. OCZ, Corsair, GSkill etc etc all have had problems with cutting edge kits, something that is unlikely to change. Luckilly because of these problems most manufacturers are offereing lifetime warranties.
 
I wouldn't touch the Gskill Ripjaws. On the P55 Intel DP55KG motherboard, and an i7 8xx series a lot of people were getting cold boot problems (and other P55 boards too). Gskill were giving out RMA's and did resolve most of the problems but it wasn't a great situation.

I've also heard of people with LGA 1366 platform boards who have random crashes with Gskill ram, that have disappeared with other memory.

Personally though, I've not had much problem with OCZ.. but I have to say as far as aftersales support goes, its very hard to beat Corsair ram. Its good quality, and if you get unlucky with a stick, their support and RMA is very decent.

had 2 sets ripjaws no a single problem and o/c very well. The current tridents are fine aswell so 3/3 s far for g.skill
 
Its the same address that fails in memtest, on average it seems to fail about 40% of the time, at exactly 2734.9Mb.

Before I try to get it returned/refunded I will change the memory position around to confirm it is not a motherboard problem.

I think I am going to try and replace it with the more expensive Patriot Viper DDR3, even if it is a bit slower.
 
Well I switched around the order of the ram and after 6 hours of testing there has not been any errors in Memtest86.

I cannot possibly comprehend why this is happening, I got the idea from an i7 overclocknig thread that suggested that switching around the ram can fix the illusion of an overclock that degrades over time.

Still gonna have to do a lot more testing before I can be confident in these three sticks of RAM.
 
Scratch that, failed again at 2734.9 Mb badram 0xaae3f7b8,0xfffffffc :S.

Problem is I have no understanding of how the ram is allocated in an i7 system, is it the motherboard, the cpu or the ram itself that allocates the blocks of ram?

e.g in this case I would assume 2734.9 Mb corresponds to the 2nd stick of RAM every time no matter the order of the ramsticks, at least thats what I hope is the case.

If it is the motherboard or cpu that allocates the address at 2734.9 to 2nd DDR3 Ram slot, then that could mean it's not the ram that's faulty but one of those two compoments, which will be a lot more difficult to replace.
 
Yep finally decided to do that, 1st stick was messed up. Now sitting with nicely running G.Skill Ripjaws, not as fast as the OCZ but hey what can ya do...

I think it is unfortunatly obvious that OCZ have had a lot of trouble with their DDR3, and a shame, as the sticks run well when they work.
