2No external monitors from laptop

Hi,

I have a problem. I currently run a setup at work where I have a laptop as my main screen and an external screen as an extended desktop.

The laptop screen is 15" widescreen and the external monitor 17" so had the idea to have 2 externals from the laptop.

The laptop is an Acer TravelMate 4280 and had VGA output (that I currently use) and a DVI port (that I have bought a VGA adaptor for to power the second screen.

I foolishly thought that when I plugged in the monitor I could swap the laptop display over to the other external monitor, but I can't seem to work out how to do it.

On my laptop one of the function keys switches an external monitor to primary display and switches off the laptop display.

bit more messing around and I have found that the second monitor that is running through the DVI>VGA converter is not being detected. Any ideas?

the laptop's output might be a one-or-the-other setup...
