Hello,

I could really do for some more game storage, ideally 2TB. What nvme should I consider? Would I need one with a heatsink? My motherboard is a Prime B650 Plus and has the following

2 x M.2 slots
• 1 x M.2 22110 (PCIe 5.0 x4 mode)
• 1 x M.2 22110 (PCIe 4.0 x4 mode)

I'm currently using a Samsung 990 Pro 1TB as my main OS and game drive if that matters

Cheers

Any decent PCIe4 drive will do. My favourite is the WD SN850X but the SN770 (possibly now replaced by the SN7100) is a cheaper option if you're happy with RAMless.

You shouldn't need a heatsink so try it without then add a third-party one if you think the temps are too high.

SK Hynix P41 is still AFAIK pretty much the fastest (real world) gaming NVME due to the use of proprietary controller/caching, I've seen some reports of reliability issues but mine so far have been solid. Samsung 990 Pro takes the lead in some scenarios though.

Nothing wrong with the WD drives either - for the most part you won't really notice much difference between any of them, though there are quite a few games the SK Hynix is a full 1-2 seconds faster loading in context of like 20-30 second load times over any other NVME and I think that still includes the available PCI-e 5.0 NVMEs, so I'd probably lean towards whatever was the best deal available at time of purchase.

Personally I'm using Samsung 990 Pro and SK Hynix P41 NVMEs in my main machines and Samsung 980 in my other systems.

EDIT: I'd definitely use a heatsink even if it is just the motherboards heatspreader with the Samsung 990 Pro - while gaming probably won't hammer them enough but under sustained use they will thermal throttle otherwise.

Appreciate the reply, thanks.

Yeah my 990 pro is using the motherboards heatspreader/heatsink. For my game drive I ended up going with the 2tb Sn850x heatsink version as my other M4 slot is below the GPU

Cheers
