I've read about people having a 2tb 3.5 harddrive externaly but somehow wiring it up to the internal harddrive connection of the PS3. As anyone here done this? Crazy storage junkies. :D

Not much point really.

I imagine then cut out chunks of the PS3's internals to stick a normal sized hard drive in there, I doubt that it's difficult to.

They use a sort of sata extension cable to wire it directly into the PS3, it acts like an internal drive when it is in fact in an external caddy.

Ah yes, misread the OP. It's so obvious now :p

Not much point? Obviously this is to store movies, music and tv shows onto.

Obviously, but it's much better to stick the HDD in a PC and stream it to the PS3, as getting the files on there is a cumbersome process, is it not?

But then why put a HD in a PS3 atall!

I'd love to have a console with a huge Hard drive connected up. PS3 is capable of recording live TV aswell is it not?

I'd have my entire music, movie and TV catalogue sitting on my PS3 hard drive. With the ability to pause live tv and record TV onto the PS3 Hard drive. While being able to play Bluray movies. Without the need for streaming. God I wish the 360 hard drive was accessible in the same way :( PS3 is a beast of a standalone media machine

Just a shame that the music management in XMB blows goats. As soon as they get that sorted I'll be buying a 500GB drive; don't see the point until then.

The PS3 reserves a percentage of the drive for system use, rather than a fixed amount. Using a drive this big would result in a LOT of wasted space. Still wouldn't say no though :p

if the drives external could you not just use a usb connection ? Some caddies look nice and kind of match the PS3.I know its not exactly the same but I can't see what benefit hooting it directly to the SATS or whatever is in there would be over USB2 for streaming movies.

I thought someone here has done this exact solution to their PS3? I forget the user but I am certain someone has posted pictures and it is a big black external hard drive "sticking" out sitting beside his PS3.
