2U Rackmount Server

most rack mount kit will be quite noisey because it is designed to sit in a comms room. Is there any reason you were going for rack kit in particular?

What are you planning to do, most things work pretty well virtulised

That ebay link server comes with no memory or HDD.

i would personally start with a Virtual Server. Look up VMWare Server.

Servers are great fun, but noisey and need specialist parts and operating systems.

Rackable are good systems but HP and Dell are the two main manufacturers in the server market i feel.

I have multiple physical servers at home, running VM's. Most 1u server built myself but funnily enough i have the EXACT same server as the one you've posted.

For the price it's a powerful little thing but as it's rackmount it's very noisy. If you can handle the noiose the dual opertron's are decent processors and if your install a linux distro works quite nicely.

I dunno, £27 is a bit of a bargain, you could pay that per month for a VPS and it'd be a fair bit slower. Depends what you want it for, it's no use for virtualisation really though so not such a great home lab box...
