Hi i hope someone could have a answer to a problem i have been having with a friend's computer she has been trying to connect two desktops to a 2wire 1800hg Router via eternet, Her modem is connected properly to the router and both her desktops connected to ports 1 and 2 on router and the router is recognising the desktops but when windows is started up it is showing her 192 ip address for the router but on the other computer it is showing a 192 ip address but finishes with a different number. It says in network connections that the connection is enabled and working but both stations are unable to connect to the net i have try'd pritty much everything anyone have any ideas please Thanks

Both computers will have an IP address that is different.
The router is giving each computer the IP address.
So if computer 1 gets something like 192.168.1.2 then computer 2 can't have the same number so will get something like 192.168.1.3 .
The router in the example above is most likely 192.168.1.1.

You need to find out the router IP address (it may differ from above as they are only for reference) and then connect to its built in setup pages and confirm that the settings it is trying to use to connect to the internet are correct. The router is an ADSL device so maybe you don't actually need a modem as well.

The router manual will be a great place to start.

Just to check a detail. You mention 'modem' in your description...the 2wire has an inbuilt modem and plugs straight into the telephone line - you're not plugging another modem into it are you?

What does the setup look like?

Code:
Wall Socket - ADSL Filter - 2wire - PC
                               |
                                - PC

Is that right?

FYI, The 2wire 1800 has a default gateway (i.e router address) of 192.168.1.254 if i remember correctly which is the number you type into Internet Explorer to access the settings. This should also be the number that shows up in the default gateway part of the connection settings for both PC's. PC's should have something like 192.168.1.60 and 192.168.1.61 if I'm still thinking straight.

HTH :)
