2x HIS HD 6950

It depends if he's using seperate fsbs but keeping his ram the same then no. How ever if his ram is decent high MHz then yes 4gbs with loose timings will overclock well

i had the p5e board that is lower spec, i ran it 400x8, also had 1066 ram but set it 800 to run 1.1 didnt make much difference, that was for 3.2ghz but for benching i ran it 400x9 for 3.6ghz i think i could have kept the 3.6 overclock but didnt realy need it so didnt bother

seany84 you could try overclocking the q6600 with less ram because i was just rememerd that when i first had my q6600 i was on xp and 2gb ram and i could run at 3.6ghz but as soon as i installed vista 64 and added another 4gb of ram i could only get 3ghz oc, im no expert on overclocking but im sure you can get a higher overclock with only 2 sticks of ram and if your useing 4 x 2gig sticks this will still leave you 4gig in the system which will be enough for you to test with

Very interesting. I will try this out. Remove 2x sticks and see how much I can push it up to. The multiplier on the CPU is 9x and FSB is currently 366 making it run at 3.33GHz.

I have to say the FSB is the only thing I changed on the motherboard settings as memory timings and CPU voltages are beyond me :o

As far as I can remember, the memory is 4x 2GB 1066MHz actually I'm 99% certain that's what they are. Can I or should I adjust the timings to something else?

Also, I have found out that my BIOS version is very very old. I am going to update this tonight too. My motherboard is ~3years old and I'd say my BIOS is at least 2.5years old. There has been a fair few BIOS revisions since then for it.

Yous are keeping me very busy these nights lads :D Ah no I really appreciate all of this :)

when you push up the fsb adjust the dram freq down to the lowest setting then when your happy with the cpu speed start to increase the dram freq, if its on auto it will overclock your ram to much and dont forget the cpu voltage if thats on auto the will jump up too, i would set it to 1.3 to start with you can always try lowering it after you have you overclock

Haven't had a minute since the weekend. I'm hoping to get around to this tonight.

so any updates on this? im having a similar problem, someone suggested it may be my psu(620w corsair) but you have a 750w and im getting better scores than you, also running on p45 chipset. check out my thread http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18227891

At 2AM I downloaded the latest BIOS revision for my motherboard. I ended up flashing it with the ASUS Windows flashing tool.

After the restart, I changed my BIOS settings i.e. FSB and RAID configuration and launched Black Ops. I turned all settings to the maximum and when I launched the game I was getting between 70-90FPS :)

I then decided to try Crysis, started her up, cranked the settings up to "very high" and 8x Anti-aliasing. I was getting 30-40FPS which was very playable.

I am still considering a motherboard, CPU and RAM upgrade after this. I'm going to hound the appropriate sub-forums :)

I am really delighted about this as yous can imagine. I have learned a lot from this episode. The reputation and the wealth of knowledge on OC'ers is well deserved.

I will run some Heaven benchmarks later tonight and post them up here.

great to hear you are sorted, i was looking in my bios last night, ive already got the latest one. my fsb is 333,ram is running @961 turned the fsb to 400 and no display, not too clued up on oc'ing.

Unfortunately I was premature to say this was working. FPS seem to have dropped back into the 30-40FPS region.

I re-seated the cards, flashed the motherboard BIOS and noticed that one card on its own performs better than the two cards together.

I am fairly sure that both cards are ok so I'm leaning towards it being a motherboard compatability problem.

My house-mate's case is blocking my second card from fitting in so I can't test it on his i7 rig :( Couldn't be bothered doing a complete swap to be honest.

Conclusion, I am ordering:
  • 2nd generation i7 2600k 3.4GHz
  • ASUS Maximus IV Extreme Intel P67 (Socket 1155)
  • Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000C9 2000MHz

This should sort me out.

yeah, I spent ~€4000 on my current rig around 3 years ago. Well overdue an upgrade.

It would be hilarious if it turned out to be a faulty card(s). I'll keep yous posted :)

Thanks for all the help lads.
