2x XFX 4890 (standard edition) or BFG GTX295?

I will be playing at 1920 x 1080. Games such as Microsoft Flight Simulator X, Operation Flashpoint 2 ARMA 1 and 2 etc

The Asus tri-slot 4870x2 is relatively quiet, as it's non-reference. It's loud at full whack but if you set up a fan profile it should keep it quiet.
The reference one is mahoosively loud

He said 295...

If your main game is Microsoft Flight Simulator X then you should research some benchmarks carefully - this game is VERY picky as to which GPUs it runs well with. AFAIK it won't use multi GPU at all - the best you can do is use multi GPU AA on nVidia cards to increase visual quality without a major performance drop.

Looks like most of the games you want to run don't do multi GPU actually...

So you'd be better off buying the fastest single card.

EDIT: Doing a quick run through the benchmarks for some of those games - unfortunatly it does look like the 285 is the best card for you infact - fortunatly its come down in price a lot recently... either that or an OC'd 275.

Ignoring the fact that Microsoft Flight Simulator X, ARMA 1 and 2 don't support multi GPU and Operation Flashpoint 2 may not either, and its also typically these sim type games - which is what he seems to prefer - that don't support multi GPU...

So sure carry on reccomending the 4870X2.

Basically the 285 would overall give you a slight performance edge over other solutions in these type of games, but the 4890 would have the advantage of the crossfire option should you find a need for it at a later date.

I play ofp , arma 1 , arma 2 on my gtx280 ( oced to 648)
I went gtx280 -> 4870x2 -> gtx280 again
As Jack burton says , "Never can tell"

Single fast gpu for the win

Did you read the list of games he said he plays/wants to play?

yes.

sure get the GTX285 if they are the only games you intend to play, but what when new games come out?

id normally agree and say get the faster single GPU card, but for the price of the 4870X2 at the moment, id say it was a no brainer.
