2x1gb 5400 memory sticks that dont work in dual channel

I just set up a new system which was bought on a budget. The MB is an Asus P5ND2 SE and the memory is 2x1gb 5400 basic value ram from a competitor. One customer review from them suggests it is elixir memory although it doesnt say this anywhere on the memory itself. The problem is that when both sticks are placed in different channels, the system fails to boot. It gets past POST but then freezes up. With either single stick in, it works fine, and with both sticks in the same module it also works fine, with windows reporting 2gb of system ram. However, I would guess this is not working at full dual channel speeds.

I have updated the BIOS on the MB to the latest version with no luck, does anyone have any other advice of how to try to get them to work, or are they likely not compatible with the MB? Since both sticks work individually it would not seem to be a problem with the memory hardware but maybe just a compatibility problem.

Thanks for any help.

I would say it pointed to a problem with the motherboard rather than the RAM. You've largely proved the RAM works but now you need to be really methodical to see exactly which combinations of sockets work and which don't. It would also be helpful if you can borrow a pair of known working DIMMs from a friend to see if they work as expected in your board.
