2x4 and 2x2

I have 8gb corsair xms3 installed (2x4gb) but have spare corsair xms3 4gb (2x2gb) can I use all four sticks in my system? With the 4gb sticks being in slot 1 and 2 and the 2gb sticks in 3 and 4?

How will it affect any overclock i do if this is possible?

It should work.

But you want the 4GB sticks acting as a pair and the 2GB sticks acting as a pair.

So if you have channels A and B then the 4GB sticks go in A1 and B1 and the 2GB sticks in A2 and B2.

Post the make and model of motherboard if you want more specific advice.

You'll have to try it and see if it affects the overclock.

I have a Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3, not sure which is A and B

You put a matching pair in the same coloured slots.

So, say, the 2x4GB sticks in the white slots and the 2x2GB sticks in the blue slots.

I assume that all the RAM operates at the same speed, timings and voltage?
