Friend looking to build a new pc and is deliberating about what to do GFX wise.

Rest of the spec will more than likely be 4790k, either 8 or 16gb ram, ssd etc and will be gaming on a 27" 1440p as a minimum, with potential for a superwide at some stage this year.

My thoughts are to get a single 980 and SLI it with another when the price drops. He is thinking SLI 970 with potential for a cheap third card to TriSLI.

Third option is to see what cards come out and wait.

This will be a build that will have to do him for the next 5 years so its understandable he wants something relatively "future proof"

What would you good people do?

970 is a turd at 1440p. 980 is a good card but like the rest of the 9xx range lacks tier 3 DirectX 12 support.

Add the cost of Gsync vs Freesync and the only sensible thing to do is wait for the 3xx range from AMD.

At this point in time I'd say it's best to wait to see what the new AMD 3xx cards are like and what (if any) impact they have on the pricing of current cards.

would agree with others, wait and see what amd are going to do. I sent back my 970 and waiting to see what they release.

May I ask why you never even mentioned AMD cards in your first post? Not a dig at all, I'm just curious to know why you and your friend only were thinking of Nvidia

At the minute we felt price/performance of the nvidia were better suited. He wanted something that would run reasonably cool with decent power consumption as well. I had thought the 290x would have been a good shout to Crossfire as an alternative.
