I recently bought a pair of these to be in with the local hillbilly Swedish population. I've also ordered a baseball cap.

Seriously what are these all about and where do they come from? Sailing scene?
I'm all up for smart casual or casually smart bit I'm struggling with the concept.

Im going to get a wicked sun tan on about 10cm of my shins if I'm not careful...

They always remind me of this:

Do you not go out much or something ? People been wearing these for well over 2 decades and its only now you're asking why people wear them ?

I imagine the answer is because they like how they look and don't care about even sun tans...

Oh are the 90's back now then? I was wearing these in Tenerife back in about 1992 :)

Awful things.

I imagine that originally they would have been work wear.

They offer the protection of trousers against minor injuries and yet are cooler and easier to move around in and since they do not have trouser bottoms, there are no trouser bottoms to get frayed or wet.

They're quite pleasant in the summer, stays formal whilst being able to have the wind on your ankles :p

e: Actually I'm not sure whether you're talking about 3/4 lengths or trousers with a roll up/cropped trousers. The latter are OK, the former are not :D

I doubt they are trendy "again" especially up here. It's pretty much like living on the american frontier in the 80s, so that makes sense somehow.

Is op talking about ‘shorts’ that go just below the knee (which are fine) or those ‘things’ that stop about 3 inches from the ankle (which are not fine)
I very nearly divorced the wife when she bought me a pair of those a few years back. I’d rather walk about in a mini skirt and crotchless panties.

Indeed, they are an an abomination, neither one thing or the other, long shorts or short trousers, what the actual fuuk ? .

Trend and fashion has no basis in logic, a few years ago any spotty dweeb wearing a long sleeved t-shirt UNDER a short sleeved shirt
would be roundly ridiculed and have the dogs set on him, now such an demonic ensemble is de riguer among the great and the good.

I'd disagree with this, shorts that go below the knee make you look like a Slim Shady impersonator, pants rolled up above the ankle can look fine if they're fairly smart.

They seem to go in and out of fashion ever 20 years or so for some reason - when my dad was young they were the thing to wear for a few years and then there was that period in the early 90s when they were popular with a certain type - can't remember if it was before or after spliffy jeans.
