I have a Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz overclocked to 2.68GHz with the stock cooler.

If I upgraded my heatsink to an Akasa AK-CCX-4002HP Venom, would I be able to reach a stable 3.6GHz with my processor, considering my motherboard?

Some people have said that it would easily reach that, I'm just making sure if that is the case with everyone. :)

I do not mean to be rude, but I am only bumping this thread to actually get an answer. Hope you moderators don't mind. Sorry. Answer please! :)

The biggest problem you have is your ram. DDR2 667 is not going to be fast enough for much of a overclock.

I can't comment on your board as i have had no experience of one but the cpu should be able to get somewhere near 3.6Ghz with faster ram.

Thanks for your reply. :)

How much faster would my RAM need to be?

By how much do you think I would be able to overclock using my current RAM?

If i remember right your cpu starts off with a 333mhz fsb at stock so your ram is already running at it's rated speed then. Your CPU has a multiplier of 7x so to hit 3.6Ghz you would need a fsb of 514.3mhz. I can't see you getting anywhere near that. Even 3.2Ghz is going to need a fsb of 457mhz. When i first posted i did'nt realise how low the multiplier was on your cpu. It is all going to depend on what dividers for the ram your board has. Like i said earlier, i have had no experience of your board so can't really point you in the right direction.

What if I upgraded to a Q6600?

Would my RAM massively limit the overclocking capability in that case?

Ah well, looks like I'll just have to stick with what I have.

I should be able to afford a much better motherboard + processor + RAM by the time my current processor can't play games anymore.

Upgrade your gfx card for ~£200 and that will make the system last at least another 2 years at high settings for most games :p

Thanks for your advice. :)

But it was only around 14 months ago when I bought the gfx card I have now. I can play COD Black Ops on nearly highest settings with my current gfx card.

I will probably wait until my system becomes almost unable to play games anymore at medium-high settings before considering an upgrade, because I've spent quite a bit on upgrades in the last 14 months (PSU, GPU, RAM and heatsink), and I will have more money by then.

I will probably end up getting one of those pre-overclocked bundles along with a new gfx card, come 12 months time. :)
