3 cards from MSI with the same problem with fans, is it my fault?

I'll try to keep this short and sweet. I'm hoping to find people who have experienced this problem, or someone who can shed some light on what might be going on.

I've had 3 MSI cards, which all have had the same issue, the fans would eventually make an annoying grinding/clicking noise. The first card was an MSI 290X 4G, which I only had for ~2 weeks before the fans became unbearable. Not long after, I received an RMA replacement from OCUK. Low and behold (though about a month into owning it), the card's fans presented the same problem.

This brings me to my final card, the 290X Lightning (which I purchased back in April), is starting to show signs of the same problem from the 4G cards. Only this time, the grinding/clicking is coming from the middle yellow fan, the 2 larger fans run perfect and I'm just about to put in yet another RMA request... :(

I mainly put it down to just being really unlucky with batches, but now I'm really not sure, now that I'm on my 3rd MSI card with the same problem. I have no other problem with other vendors. Take my 7970 from Sapphire, that's been sitting in my second machine for nearly 2 years now without a problem.

Has anyone had any problems with MSI's Twin Frozr GPU fans?

I think what your experiencing is known as coil whine and apparently common in quite a few cards! I have 2 270x 4gb msi cards in my rig, and have just had to rma the older card as one of the fans has stopped spinning all together , it did it a while ago but I managed to get it spinning again, but now it's dead I think :( .. The cards are still amazing though imo wouldn't let it put me off buying another ...

I wish it was a coil whine! :P. I don't think I've ever heard any coil whine from this card, the cards themselves I've had from MSI run great, not so much for the fans.

I have made this point many times on these forums but it is worth mentioning again to warn any future potential shoppers. MSI fans are a shambles. Every problem i have ever encountered with MSI (and there has been more than a few) have been directly related to the garbage fans they insist on using. Almost every fan complaint on these forums will point back to them. I will never buy their products again.

According to MSI you were mining, running 100% fan speeds and overheating!

MSI I would not recommend to anyone and was a fan of them for a few years :(

MSI I have been a bit like XFX for me (though not as bad as XFX) - generally great products but they always try to cheap out somewhere to try and save what must be pennies at the expense of long term durability. Its a bit more hit and miss with MSI though unlike XFX where you could pretty much guarantee it with every product.

Personally own two MSI GE 780, and go no problems with it, was satisfied with the 1st cards performance therefore got a second one. But had horrible luck with 7970 Asus Matrix when I got it.

I would say it comes down to the luck of the draw, sometimes you can get a golden card with no problems which OCs like mad, a card with a minor issues with which you can live with, and a card which is absolutely horrible.

That's only my experience though.

Most of the problems are coming down to the AMD cards, not the Nvidia batch! It's not just the luck of the draw, there are far too many with AMD MSI fan related issues I believe :(

Besides if it was just luck of the draw, the MSI rep would not have come out and issued a statement

rattling sounds to me like the fans are in contact with something, but i guess you already checked cable management, or anything that is too close to the fans.
it's just weird that 3 cards get the same probleme, you should try your luck on lottery

Ah I see fair enough :) .. No I've never heard it on mine either , just one of the fans wanted to pack in. It tried to spin itself but can't , bet I get it back saying it was working :( .. I won't accept that haha

I'm sure you'll be fine! I've never had an RMA rejection (only ever had to RMA MSI products, coincidentally... touches wood :P).
