My house is currently not getting internet so I purchased a 3 mobile broadband dongle.

It has 1GB of data allowance on it at the moment.

Does anyone have any tips to use less data? I have just told Chrome to disable images and plug-ins.

Thanks.

I have a similar setup (Voda rather than 3) in a second property and use NetMeter to check download and upload usage. I have set an alarm at 800M but have never hit it during the past two years. With normal internet browsing (no downloading, live content / Net TV etc. and email 1G has always lasted me the month.

NetMeter used to be free but now charge 25$ (I think); it is fully supported with regular updates etc......IMO worth the dosh.

Just buy some 3gb ones off the bay cost around £12 now. They used to be around £8 about a year ago,I get them for my nephews as they have no phone-line at home

3 Does a 15gb per month contract for £18 a month for 18 months or £15 per month for 24.

Im on T mobile pay as you go, you only get the 1gb a month but you get unlimited browsing after. Im over 1gb right now :). once over the 1gb it means no videos at all. i found gaming still works over it though. this is for 15 a month.

I use a 5gb dongle for internet from 3 for £15 a month on a monthly contract as i won't be needing it after march. 3 do have a £15 a month tariff for ipads with 10gb but i don't know if it would work on their normal dongle.

If you had gone for the mobile phone One plan with all you can eat data, you could tether that to your laptop and have 80gb a month to play with.

But does mean having a mobile phone contract for 24 months.

Not necessarily. You can get a SIM only One Plan from Three which is a one month rolling contract for £25 a month. If you then already had a 3G phone (or bought one, Europas are cheap for example), then you could tether it to multiple devices with the unlimited data usage. Don't bother trying the cheaper plans with unlimited data - those don't allow tethering. Also, the phone SIMs don't work in the dongles so I'm told.
