Currently running 2 monitors 1 hdmi 1 DVI on a 280x.

I game only on a single monitor, while the 2nd is for everything else ( browsing, movies, obs and chat while streaming. )

I'd like to add a 3rd monitor to move some around etc, and have better access while gaming/streaming.

Note, still going to game on the single monitor, the other 2 are for off game/stream stuff, as I wont be gaming over the 3 monitors at the same time.

Question: Will I need an Active or Passive mini displayport for this?

thanks.

Depends on what cable you will be using after the adaptor I believe (not sure) But for VGA I can say for certain a cheap passive adaptor will work but I think for HDMI and DVI an active one is needed

It's a small VGA monitor, so it would be VGA -> DVI adaptor -> Passive mini display port -> 280x.

that would work right?

You need an active unless it's a display port monitor. The 280X can only generate two clock signals which non display port monitors need, an active adapter generates this clock signal to work with other ports.

U have a 3770K so why dont u run the third monitor from ur Intel HD graphics? This is what i do with my third monitor ;)

Furthermore if ur streaming then u can enable Intel Quick Sync in OBS which uses the graphics chip on the 3770K and it takes a load off ur CPU. I do this too :D

Oh wow.. never thought about something like that.

But will that be 2 desktops? or will it be one?

as in gpu desktop with 2 monitors then onboard with another?

Or will all 3 be 1.

Hope that makes sense

U still have 3 monitors working at the same time.. 2 from ur card and the other hooked up into one of ur mobo ports. Its really quite easy to set up. Enable the Intel graphics in ur bios and then go to Intels website and search for the drivers. After u have it all set up u just go to screen resolution as u normally do and adjust as u like. Set primary monitor etc.

Setting to extended desktop will give u 3 seperate screens with only one having the taskbar. Or if u wish u can have the 2 from ur card set as one desktop with the taskbar stretched across the 2 :)
