Hi there, I have recently just got a Corsair CC-9011050-WW Carbide Series SPEC-01 Mid-Tower ATX and Asus Z97-PRO Gamer S1150 ATX. The Case fan has 3 pins and the motherboard has 4 and while the LEDs on the fan light up it doesn't spin. Do i need a 4 pin fan or is something faulty?

I have a corsair case and the fans that came with it also had LEDs. They are wired differently compared to normal fans, their connectors are different too. This could be your problem...

OR

It could be the pin outs are different, most likely fan side. The mobo 3 pin is voltage controlled, whereas PWM fans are 4 pin on/off controlled and connect to 4 pin mobo out pins.

Anthony.

I had a blue fan that was 3 pin and it worked fine when i plugged it into the 4 pin header on the mobo.

The +5v provides the power, so yes I'd expect that was your issue.

Not sure what the middle 2 are, but GND and +5v are necessary to run.

3 pin fan pinout is
1 GND
2 +12vDC
3 Sense (rotation sensor)

Only difference on 4 pin header is it also supports PWM so pin 4 is

4 Control (i.e. speed control)

You shouldn't need to rewire anything, the 3 pin should just go on the 4 pin header and with the locator bit at the back, it shouldn't be possible to align to thw wrong pins.

Although, i have received a fan in the past that was actually miswired, but unusal to say the least.
