Well it's happened. After 10 month of faultless service my 360 has displayed the dreaded 3 red lights :(

I had never had a problem until last week, when it locked up for the first time, and now over the last week it has been locking up more and more. I just fired up Ridge Racer and it locked before loading the race, I restart it only to get a black screen, a 15 second wait and then the red lights. This has been repeated on the next 3 restarts.

So I now need to decide what is the best action to take and hopefully someone here can advise?

I am really worried about loosing save game data. I backed up most of my full games to the memory stick the other night, but most Arcade games will not allow you to copy the save game file (eg Zuma) or do not have a separate file, only the 25mb game file (eg Frogger). Therefore I am reluctant to send my HDD back and if they insist I will probably buy a new one and send that.

I bought the 360 from Gameplay. Am I best of returning it through them and getting a new replacement or phoning Microsoft direct and getting a possible refurb?

Any thoughts appreciated. Gutted no 360 for bank holiday weekend.

Im the same as yourself, went since December last year and not a problem, then last week it started to freeze up on me after 5 mins just sitting in dashboard, i then tried to play BF2:MC and it froze right away, after that it froze on bootup until it eventually just didnt turn on, all of the times this happened i got the dreaded 3 lights. I phoned up the local high street electrical store from which i bought it from and they said i could go instore with it and they can arrange it to be repaired as its under gaurentee but the guy went on to say i would be better to do it myself through microsoft as they arange to pick it up and return it at your house, it was rather annoying at first phoning the microsoft tech support cause they twice took detials and said someone would call me back, after 2 days i got sick of waiting and called again and demanded it be sorted right now, the guy this time was more helpfull than the other 2 and arranged for UPS to pick it up the following day, he said in all it would take about 5 days which i will give them til monday, when the UPS chap turned up he had the sticker for the box i had packed my 360 in. You have to put it in a unmarked box, and only the 360 itself so anything on your hard drive will be saved.
I hope this is of some help to you m8, good luck ;)

Think yourself lucky it wasnt in 2 months time when your warranty runs out. Then the real battle threads will start on here. I couldnt be bothered with the hassle so extended my warranty.

If you want to back-up your game-saves from the HDD it's entirely possible using the Xecuter Connectivity Kit.

Btw. I advise you to return it to the shop you bought it from and get a new replacement because Microsoft send out new units but in recycled exterior casing, and besides that my 2nd replacement turned out to be faulty.

Thanks for the input guys.

BigBrisy, relieved to hear that you didn't need to send the HDD back. Did MS tell you not to send it back, or did they just not mention it?

I was wondering if the three red lights is a definite hardware problem or software related / corrupt data.

When my first one died I sent it back to gameplay and they had a new one to me in 2 days! Great service. The second 360 has just died and instead i've sent this one to microsoft. They have had it since today and have stated expect they expect to get me one sent out real soon.

just out of interest, how would one extend their warranty of the 360? any companies that do it?

oh heres a quick fix for the dreaded red light problem:

Fill in the coupon that came in the box or phone microsoft. £50 odd quid for two more years.

The actual guy from microsoft himself told me not to post the hard drive or the power pack, just the 360. The only thing he mentioned to me about the 3 red lights was that it was a hardware failure but he couldnt be more specific, he did ask though what colour the power light was when the 3 red outer lights were flashing...dunno what thats about as it can only be green?

PSU has orange red and green leds in.

When I first got mine a month or so ago it was doa with the 3 red lights, got a replacement that came 2 days later. The one I got now froze ingame just the other day, getting me scared now :(

I'll take a beer too

so in 2 months when if my 360 dies i have to pay for another one if i dont have the 50 quid cover, or can VIRII find stuff to fight my case

The problem for me is how long that might drag on fighting that. I couldnt be bothered with that hassle.

How did he establish that?
After going through the steps on the microsoft site i noticed the light on the power pack was staying amber so we tried a different power pack.
