I have just got the RRoD, just registered the 360 on the microsoft website. Warranty is listed as Dec 25th 2008.

I thought RRoD was given an extended 3 year warranty but when I go throug the online process it says "out of warranty" and I am expected to pay for a fix.

Ah depends if you have the receipt for original purchase or not. If that's under 3 years you are covered, if not you are going to need a new xbox :(

sigh, was purchased 2nd hand :S

Only using it as a media center really. Cannot remember the last time I actually played any games on it. Think I will look to see how cheap I can build a media center PC.

Yep, and it goes from the manufacture date so it would have expired last year.

Are you sure about that? What if said stock has been in a warehouse for 6 months?

It's still worth ringing them but just don't mention about the fact it's second hand and if they ask for proof of purchase just say it was such a long time ago, that you have probably lost it.

Proof of purchase doesn't come into it, it's done on the serial number. If it was manufactured less than 3 years ago they will repair it, if it was manufactured more than 3 years ago they won't, it's as simple as that.

Saved me from answering the question. :p

When you book it in for repairs it asks for the serial number if I remember rightly, if it's out of warranty it'll tell you there and then. The OP's Xbox is out of warranty I don't think it unreasonable that he should have to pay for any repairs that need doing.
