@ManCave
So currently running a 7990
4 screens attached, however can't run them all at once for some reason. their all connected via DP.

Screen 1: 16:9 1920x1080 [HDMI to Mini-DP]
Screen 2: 21:9 2560x1080 [DP to Mini-DP]
Screen 3: 16:9 1920x1080 [HDMI to Mini-DP]
TV: 16:9 1920x1080 [HDMI to Mini-DP]

So why can i not run all 4 screens at once?

i have to disable one to make the TV work...

Also on Nvidia
if i were to go over to Nvidia How would you attach 4 screens to say a 780TI or SLI?

one on HDMI one on DP and 2 on DVI?

would be nice to know in case i do switch at maxwell & what adapters to buy :)

I can answer the nVidia question. You can attach the screens to any of the outputs. The screens need to be running at the same resolution though but any of the connectors will work. The only time you would need to use specifice connectors would be for 120Hz+ (2xDVI and 1xDP)

Sorry I am not familiar with multi screens on AMD.

so you cant run different resolution (just web-browsing) on Nvidia i'm not sure that's right? :S or did I read it wrong

unless you mean when SLI is enabled?

I have my 3 monitors and the Plasma TV all running at the same time all connected to the first 7950 at different resolutions .

You can run 2 monitors with different resolutions but more is a no no with nVidia (unless that has changed in the last couple of months).

Does the 7990 work the same as the other 7 series cards, i.e. you can only use 2 non-DP to DP connections?

Screen 1: 16:9 1920x1080 [HDMI to Mini-DP]
Screen 2: 21:9 2560x1080 [DP to Mini-DP]
Screen 3: 16:9 1920x1080 [HDMI to Mini-DP]
TV: 16:9 1920x1080 [HDMI to Mini-DP]

You have 3 connections that aren't DP to DP so that may be the reason that only 2 of them work at the same time.

Assuming that's the problem then an active adapter may be the answer unless one of the 3 screens connected by HDMI also has DP.

DVI to DVI Screen 1
Mini DP to DVI Active adapter Screen 2
Mini DP to DVI Active adapter Screen 3
HDMI to HDMI TV

Was that limitation introduced with a driver revision after 335.23?

I haven't updated my graphics drivers since then, as I haven't had time for gaming.

Running 1 x 1080p @ 120hz, 1x 1440p @ 60hz and 1x 2560x1080 @ 60hz on 680 SLI here (SLI enabled)

If you are running 4 displays 2 of them have to be run off DP signals.

You can only use 2 "Legacy" signals on AMD cards the rest have to be DP signals

Passive dongles use the DisplayPort connection to receive non-DP signaling from the connector and they 'passively' adjust the signals to be compliant with the connected monitor. Passive dongles are considered legacy connections, not DisplayPort connections, therefore they do not fulfill the DisplayPort connection requirement mentioned previously and cannot be used to enable 3 or more displays. They do, however, offer an affordable solution to adapt legacy displays to DisplayPort connections.

Active dongles use true DisplayPort signaling to 'actively' translate and re-transmit the signals as the required outputs. Because they use the true DisplayPort signaling, they are considered a DisplayPort connection and meet the requirements to enable 3 or more displays.

Your current setup has 3 screens connected via Legacy signals.
