Owned by my gf, she's taken very good care of it and still looks new

Yesterday however, upon plugging in the brick, no lights come up on the laptop, the brick itself has a light showing on it.

Has anyone had a brick that lights up, but fails to work?

It's out of warranty, have tried removing the battery and it won't power on when the battery is out and just the brick is plugged in (this would work fine in normal operation)..

Possibilities..
a. the brick is broken
b. the laptop connection is broken

-The battery has about 3% charge left in it, so the laptop is working besides that

Options?

Would rather not have to get a new laptop, as she only uses it for college work, but I've told her it's possible we might have to.

Try unplugging the battery and plugging in the charger and see if it will work, im sure thats possible.

Then you can tell if its the Battery or the laptop, im thinking the battery could have packed up!

Sounds like either the power connector or board is damaged.

Try searching for sales of damaged models (broken display, same model) and see if you can pick one up cheap, then swap out the boards? Just make sure the faulty one does not have a mobo fault.

You might find a certain auction selling one and pick it up cheaper then £420, besides that, if she only uses it for web browsing, email or word/excel sheets? then a cheaper laptop will do just fine sub £300 :)
