Hi all, I need to get a cheap £300-£350 (~£550-$650) laptop for the girlfriend. It only needs to do general stuff, no games or whatever.

I found this one:

Toshiba Satellite Pro L40-17G Laptop Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor T2330 1.60GHz 1024MB 80GB DVD-SM 15.4inch TruBrite® WXGA TFT Intel®

for £300. I think that looks like a pretty good deal. Are toshiba laptops any good or will it crap out in a year? Anyone know of any better deals about or whatever?

Also, it seems like all laptops these days come with vista... which is obviously bollucks. Is vista gonna suck the life out of this thing and make it run like a 486? Would it be a nightmare to get XP running on it?

No mate, Vista is fine. Don't fall into the trap that many seem to do and think it's rubbish. Your looking at purchasing a new laptop, why go with an operating system that is old hat now?.

Try Vista, you will be glad you did.

There is nothing wrong with Vista. Might wanna boost the RAM to 2gb though.

Agreed.

2Gb would be a prudent upgrade. ;)
