I need to get a new Laptop for my mum.

I have been looking round the net and have seen the Inspiron 1501 is there any better I can get for the money or is this the best bet?

Thanks

Please define 'better'. What is it that you are looking for in a laptop? Portability, battery life, power, desktop replacement,?

What are you going to use it for? Web browsing, or 3d modelling?

Does you mum already have a laptop and what is it and why does she need a new one?

A litle info goes a long way.

Other wise, yes that's a fine laptop it'll do.

For this budget I recently opted for the vostro 1000, nice laptop 2gig of ram. Good bang for the buck - perfect for your mother.

Sorry, I should have given more information in the first post.

The laptop is for my mum who isn't exactly what you'd call a power user. She will literally just be using the laptop to get on the internet for day to day use. It will more than likely always be plugged in, but would prefer a laptop so she can use it in the lounge in front of the TV.

I have been looking at the Vostro 1000 but not sure how good the lowest spec machine is. Looking at the mid-spec one I am not sure whether it is best to get her XP - which she is used to - or future-proof it a little more and get Vista but as the only version of Vista that comes with it is Business I am not sure this would be suitable.

How good is the lowest spec Vostro? I am trying to save my mum as much money as possible.

Thanks for your help guys.

Change O/S to XP not to sure about the battery probably change that, but if always plugged in leave as is, apart from that nice laptop

Ninja

PS: forgot to say no change to cost if ya fancy XP instead of Vista

Vista and XP are quite similar in their basic operation, and I doubt your Mum knows enough about Xp to really notice the more significant differences anyway. If it comes with Vista, might as well stick with it, it'll look nicer and probably be a bit easier for her to use.

ninja's spec looks very good for the money, should manage Vista and anything else she uses without problems, and plenty of RAM there too so should last quite a while.
