he has £300-£400 to spare

what's the best upgrade for that money

EDIT: it will be used for stuff like photoshop and for some gaming

"socket 1156 will be 'dead' soon". Will it? They only introduced it last year. Not saying you're wrong, just asking for more info.

What will replace it? Will future Intel processors all move to LGA1366 or is something new coming in?

bit depressing isn't it? useless ****ing Intel, at least AMD make them backwards compatible (to a degree)

Thanks. Now I know what to Google for ...
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Bridge_(microarchitecture) "Overclocking is limited to only 2-3% over the factory clock speed due to Intel locking the speed of every bus to the base clock.", so I'm not sure it will be worth waiting for anyway! Perhaps there will be i7 equivalent versions later without this restriction. But if so, no doubt they'll be expensive.

Of course Int*l can charge what ever they want with no competition and you will have to pay it if you want it :(

The only way will be if they release 'K' versions of the chip with unlocked multipliers.

How much existing DDR2 mem has he got, if he has enough you could use a AM2+ board with the existing DDR2 mem and then stulid's 1st suggestion would be on budget

1156 is being dumped for 1155, thats right! 1pin less!!!

Not fair really is it :(

Regardless if it forward or backwards compatible, for £300 you can buy a system that will perform and last for a few years yet and by that time they'll be something else anyway but darn you Intel!
