3000MHz RAM only stable at JDEC speeds

I recently upgraded to a 2700X and got some

Team Group Vulcan T-Force 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C16 3000MHz

RAM to go with it on my x470 board. I knew I was being cheap, but I figured I could live with 3000MHz CL16 RAM for now. Unfortunately, I can't get it stable anywhere near that. 2400MHz is the best I get. Anything else and I get memtest errors and the occasional BSOD. Weirdly I can run XMP settings at 2933MHz with only occasional BSOD, so it's not like it's wildly unstable. I just want to rule out user error before I settle for slow RAM, especially on a Ryzen system where RAM speed really counts. I would have spent more if I'd realised I was actually effectively buying 2400MHz RAM!

Help!

For posterity, I swapped the kits for some corsair vengeance and everything now runs fine at 2933MHz. Had to dig through my mobo compatibility list to find something that fit the bill, so just remember to check that list before you buy your RAM, or else it's a risk.
