I've seen an interesting deal on the Dell 3007WFP. I obviously can't mention prices. But it's refurbished and can be had for only a little more (less than £100) more than a new 2407. It's quite tempting. Are there any big downsides for a gamer with the 3007 compared to the 2407?

How is ghosting, lag, etc?

Thanks...

Main downside is you will need to have an uber rig to run stuff acceptably at the native res. 8800GTX or GTS (not 320MB) would be nice, preferably SLI'd. At the bare minimum you will need a dual link DVI card to run at the native resolution at all.

Thanks for that. I have a 7800 GTX 512 EE (very fast in its day but obviously not up there with the best anymore). I realise this won't be anywhere near good enough for games at a native res. But I'd be happy to run non-native until an upgrade later in the year.

As said a 3007 would be a nightmare to run games on at native 2560 x 1600 (which is 1.8 times more pixels than 1920x1200). Therefore you're frame rates will be roughly halved using the 3007. Plus how many games actually support this resolution? Personally, I wouldn't want a 30" tft on my desk as I sit too close. Maybe a 2707 would be a good compromise.

Hmmm I see what you mean. But resolution aside, are there other significant losses by going so large... e.g. significantly worse ghosting or lag?

The 3007 is a good deal as its refurbished. But the 2707 wouldn't be. It would be a lot more expensive than this 3007.

Not sure about lag and ghosting. Lots of info on hardforum.com so have a search there. My issue would be with the screen being too big, how close will you be sitting? I sit about 1m from my Dell 2407 and wouldn't really want anything bigger tbh. Also, isn't there a 3007-HC, what's the difference?

However good a deal this is, it sounds like I'd be better going the 2407 route. Thanks for the input.

Well, it sounds like a very good deal if you don't mind a refurb. Hopefully someone with a 3007 can give you some advice. What size screen do you have atm? The 24" screens are surprisingly big imo, try here .

I currently have a 19" normal aspect TFT - Viewsonix VX912 (and a superb 21" CRT but I rarely use that now). So a 24" will still be a great upgrade.

Very similar to what I had. Just changed from a Viewsonic VX910 to the Dell 2407 and I'm extremely pleased. I was surprised how much bigger it is in the flesh. Pretty much fills my peripheral vision when I sit forward. I think the Dell is still under £500 atm so a great deal. Interesting thread on 30" screens here.

I have a 2405 and a 3007. I thought that the 2405 was big until I got the 3007  I have my 3007 about 25% further away than I had my 2405. This gives a slightly bigger field of view without having to move my eyes to much.

As long as you have working scaling in the drivers running games at 1600*1200 looks OK (and a single X1900XT was fast enough). However, this is a big IF, the ATI drivers don't support scaling but keeping the aspect ration and only half the nV drives have it working.

Beware, after a 3007 the 2405 feels small and the 17" at work is positively minute!

Yeh with a 30" you will find it hard to play games as you physically have to move your eyes around the screen, not good as you want reflex gaming ideally. I would get the 24".

just play the games at 1:1 mapping at 1920*1200 then. You effectvely have a 24" monitor within a 30" monitor that way with black borders.

Ooops, bit of an impulse buy but I just ordered a brand new 3007WFP-HC. If I find I don't get on with it then I can always return it or possibly even sell it on (got it for a very good price).
