Hi all,

Posting this on behalf of a mate.

He's got a 306, and on full lock there's a fairly loud 'clunking' noise. Seems to happen most when its full lock to the right.

He said that he had a similar noise in Feb of this year... apparantly the boot cover came off when he was around wales, and he drove about 150 miles through fairly harsh conditions (snow) not knowing this was off. Only realised when there was a whine coming from the front right (where the cover had come off) when he was nearing home.

The boot thingy was completly clean, no grease to be seen... obviously washed out in the rain/snow. Anyway, it developed a clunking noise when on full lock as well... anyway - the cap thing was replaced (had torn) and re-greased.... and he's pretty sure his dad replaced the bearing - but doesn't know until tommorow!

Anyway, it drove fine until yesterday - still driving fine bar the clunk on full lock. No whine, or any other noises. Steering does vibrate a bit more than unusual he reckons (Does 100 miles a week on the motorway) at high speeds (80-90) seems ok any other time.

Ideas? Drive Shaft... what should he look for? His dad can't look at it until next week so he doesn't really want to use it if he's going to cause more damage.

cheers

If you're talking about the CV joint boot and all they did was replace the boot, then all they did was a cosmetic repair. The CV joint inside is ruined.

The clunking he's hearing is most likely the CV joint about to grenade.

:o grenade? reckon he should take it easy/not drive it on the motorway?

He's pretty sure something was replaced, but can't remember - was away at uni at the time. He can't get in touch with his dad until tommorow evening so just wanted some ideas really.

Whatever it was seems to of just came back, it's been a good 9 monthes since the original 'clunking' and incident, and it's done around 8k since then (including a 1 and a half k holiday)...

If it is the CV joint, is that in need of a complete CV replacement?

My mondeo has been making a clunking noise on full lock for about 2 months now, hasn't grenaded yet, havent got any spare time to book it in and get it sorted! :o

Remember an old doctor's saying, "Patient : Doc, it hurts when I do this. Doc : Then don't do that."?

If he's hearing a strange clunk when at full lock, then the first thing to do is not put it at full lock!!

When a CV joint is bent at a steep angle, it's something like 200 times the stress put on it than when it's straight. So avoid putting it at severe angles.

Next I would look at getting it replaced as soon as is financially possible.

But that's just me. I've only had four of them come apart on me in my lifetime. And it ain't fun being stranded in the middle of nowhere with no drive capability.

Cool, cheers Mickey - he hasn't been sitting there doing full lock turns all night though, lol :o

CV Joint only seems to be around £30 for a 1.4 306... so isn't too bad if he can persuade his dad to fit it :p

CV Joint/Ball joint --- same thing?

No. The CV joint is the flexible coupling at the wheel end of the driveshaft. The ball joint is the pivot point at the end of the steering linkages.

They do this when the front wishbone bushes have gone. Any sort of clunking/creaking on full lock and that usually the culprit.
