Just got back from the garage with my 2001 Pug 306 Meridian and a VT30 :(

It failed both front shocks (serious fluid leaks) and they want £200 to fix her. I'm no mechanic but I don't might getting my hands dirty and have lots of tools! So i'm thinking of having a go myself as money is a bit tight at the moment, 2x shock absorbers from a motor factors should be under £80 (garage quoted me this and the rest was labour) So my question is how hard are they to change and will i need specialist tools?

Thanks guys.

Spring compressors (£13) perhaps a tool to take the top nut off from the strut.

Not a hard job, i'd be supprised if two simple shocks came to £80, i guess around half that price.

The only tools i had to get to do mines was a set of deep offset Spanners to hold the bolt as i slackened the allen key bolt in the middle.

Set of spring compressors is a must unless u want a spring in the face or in the next street.

One of the easyest jobs you can do.

Thanks Firestar

Just checked with Sutton Auto factors and there £26.93 each, Think i'm gonna give it a go myself, factor in the spring compressors and that's about £130 saving on the garage doing it.

Thanks guys

The mechanic said it would be a 2 hour job (1 hour per side) would it really take a mechanic that long and how long would it take a novice like me?

:)

Christ IMO it should only take you about that length of time, pending you dont hit any problems.

My fiesta only had a bolt at the top through the Strut top mount, one to keep brake hose one another to keep stabliser bar on and 2 for attatching to the Hub, once removed it all came appart easily and compressed the spring undid the top nut spring and boot cover out and onto the new and put back together.

Also, no disrespect but i would get a Haynes manual, fair enough it is 20 quid but one fo the best things to buy if you are going to be working on your car.
