306 Problems

I've got an S reg 306 and have a couple of problems with it. I've left them for a while but now I thought I may as well sort them out :)

- The light on the digital clock no longer works. Could this be either a fuse (I think there's just one fuse for the clock and that light?) or the light itself? Where can I get a new LED for it?

- The cigarette lighter hasn't worked since getting the car. Whilst this doesn't matter too much, as no one is allowed to smoke in the car, I'd like to get it working incase I need to charge my phone with an in-car charger. Could this be a fuse? Or is it likely to be something else?

- There is a very fast clicking in the car, which sounds very much like the clicking of the indicators, only quicker (I think this is the indicator relay from looking at previous posts). Is this easy to change myself? If so where could I source one?

I'd rather sort all these problems myself (with the help of a Haynes manual) than take it to a garage to solve these (hopefully) relatively simple problems. I'm quite a novice when it comes to cars though, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If the clock still works it's likely the bulbs behind have blown. Easy to replace just prise off fascia and get the torx bits handy. Take a bulb to a motorfactor to get it matched up.

Cig lighter fuse is common to blow apparently (never happened in mine). Give me the model no and i'll check the hynes manual for the fuse number that it is.

The fast clicking could be dodgy connections to do with the alarm if your 306 has one. Makes the indicator relay go mental. (the pro who installed my alarm didnt solder all the connections properly and as I was driving along the car tried to imobalise it's self at 40mph, the indicator relay had an embolism ). check 306gti6.com as it's quite common.

Try wiggling your indicator stalk. If it stops the fast clicking then there lies your problem. Be warned though when they get really worn they start to make smoke, which isn't nice

I thought my clock had died on my late R reg 306 however in daylight I could just make out the time still, so I prodded it a bit, and it lit back up! Dodgy connection I think, as sometimes it partially/fully goes out again, so I poke it some more :/

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll try to get the bulb out with the help of the Haynes manual. The car doesn't have an aftermarket alarm so I think it must be the indicator relay. Where's the best place to get fuses from? I don't know any motorfactors around here as I haven't been in the area long.

Wiggling the stalk does stop it, or can start it if it isn't clicking already, so I'm pretty sure that's where the problem lies. Is it easy to replace? Where can I buy an indicator relay?

If it was that a bulb had blown it would only be clicking when I indicate, which it doesn't.

Tried prodding the clock but to no avail :)

Thanks again :)

You need a new stalk then mate, not the relay. You can pick one up from a scrapyard for about £10/15 or get one from somewhere such as GSF which would come in around £30.

Is a new stalk easy to fix? It only stops it sometimes when I very slightly move the stalk (not far enough to put indicators or full beams on). Will it definately be the stalk rather than the relay? What are the symptoms of it being the relay? Thanks :)

This may be a stupid question but is it possible to fit a new clock with the temperature reading on it into a 98 S reg which doesn't have one currently? Is there even a temperature sensor present? My mate has a T reg LX which has one (also a Phase 2) so was just wondering as I might get a new one with the temperature gauge on it :)

It'll be the stalk, my first 306 did it and I sold it before i changed the stalk. My second 306 did it, eventually they smoke lots and it smells BAD! They are easy to replace. Few steering column screws, and another few to hold the stalk in as far as i can remember.

My 'S' reg 306 has the same annoying clicking noise. Not sure if it's the stalk on mine or the relay though.

The bulb behind the mileometer has also blown so it's hard to see the mileage. I've got a funny feeling this will be a royal pain to change, any ideas?

My lighter socket didnt work either (needed it for my tomtom).

Discovered that something had blew the fuse. Its 20amp, cant remember what colour. But its in slot 16, even though its not labelled, its next to slot 15 :p at the end of a row. You should have spare fuses (bottom row) as well so just stick one of the 20amp ones in. Mine worked fine then :).

Mmm I doubt it as the little temperature nipple is on the underside of the wingmirror. So unless you fancy changing wingmirrors aswell then no. Even then I dunno how it's wired.

Lot's of work for something so small imo :)

Swapped the fuse for the cig lighter with one of the ones from the bottom. The lighter still doesn't work but the phone charger works in it so that's fine as I wouldn't use the actual lighter anyway :)

I took off the fascia for the clock and suddenly the light came back on, so just gonna wait and see if it goes out again. I guess it was just a loose connection.

Will sort out the stalk at some point, althoguh I'm not really sure where to get one from.

Ok thanks mate. Sorry to be a pain but do you have any idea of the difference between T93305B and T93305 on GSF? One's £36.50 and one's £34.00. I need one with front and real fogs on :)

I've just looked myself mate and no its not very descript, but I'd imagine the dearer one will have the fogs  If you ring them and check they will tell you, they are more than helpful :)

Sorry I cant be of more help. I paid £10 for mine from the scrappy but new is better ;)

Hi again mate, I've just had a look in my GSF catalogue they sent through the post and spotted this -

306 mk2 (with fogs/twin optic) 1997> T93305 £34.00+

According to the brochure, the T99305B has no fogs
