Hi guys,

I think it's time to trade the gpu in... had her since the "great global chip shortage" of '21 and it feels like the time is right.

Ideally looking for something with more than 12GB to give me a little bit of future proofing but mainly to play new stuff now at an acceptable frame rate. I play in 2k on a "27 monitor. Rest of spec in sig :)

What are we thinking?

Thanks.

9070xt at 620 or 5700ti at 800or higher to have a meaningful upgrade. I don't believe anything else is worth it. There are some 7900xt also at 620 but the ray tracing on the newer card is so much better.i have a 3070ti and have a 5700ti on order. I tried for a 9070xt but was not successful.

If you can get a great deal on a 12gb card I wouldn't discount it. I've so far only encountered a lack of vram on Indiana Jones when running the path racing setting.
However because it's so demanding, frame gen is a must. Therefore I just run at near max settings with RT lighting only, at close 90+fps while looking way better what I get on Series X.
I also agree with Copesman, those 2 are fantastic recommendations.

Thanks guys! Looks like I'm waiting for a deal/availability on the 9070/9070 XT then... I was contemplating a 7800 XT but not much of an upgrade?

It's an upgrade for sure sure but the cost to performance ratio is far better on the 9070 XT (if you can get one at MSRP) and there's not that much difference in price between the two so I'd hold out for one.

either a 9070 or 9070xt I wouldn't bother with anything nvidia this gen unless you want to megaball and go 5090

The 7800 XT isn't a bad card. It's just bad value at current prices.

Going by the Tom's Hardware review, the 9070 is 26% more powerful in raster at 1440p and 44% more powerful in RT. On top of that, the 9070 gets FSR4. Base spec models should be £525-£540 once stock settles, so £75-£90 more than the lowest current 7800 XT prices. That's a lot more power for not a lot more money.

Also worth noting that the 9070 XT is even better value than the 9070, further cementing how bad a buy the 7800 XT is at its current £450+ price.

I'd not touch a 7800XT right now given you can get a 9070(XT) for around the same price.

Don't let people fearmonger you into thinking the AMD launch is bad, they had a ton of stock with a lot more on the way. It was just extremely popular due to Nvidia fudging their own and being shockingly misleading in regards to their products, I'm going out on a limb here but frankly I can't see it taking more than a month or so for things to settle down.

Even if I'm wrong it's a very, very bad time to buy a last gen card.

Yeah, wait for one of these to come back in stock.

This is the review of the Nitro+ which is a few % faster, 117% faster than your 3060 Ti, the Pulse is a good card and would still be 110% faster.

In RT it manages to do even better at 144% faster.

I marked the RX 7800 XT in red, your current GPU in green.

yikes, ok... i think you might have convinced me

I'm in the same boat and was looking for an RTX 5070 TI which obviously was a **** show and then when AMD released, I was after a RX 9070 XT which was also a **** show :p

So basically, hold out for either of those, or above if you're adamant you want to buy a new card.
**** show as in other people got them who would now be moaning if they didnt ;)

In all seriousness OC sold 5000 cards so thats very different from the 50-100 they had for the Ti , AMD said stocks are inbound for all vendors but what this meens or the volume who knows

some did get scalped but even now hardly any on ebay and half of them are brands oc dont sell

This feels like déjà vu all over again—just like the Nvidia vs. AMD situation, with Intel's launch falling flat and AMD struggling to supply enough X3D chips.

This is the result of all the chips being made at TSMC and apple having first dip and all the new nodes, Nvidia, amd and intel are fighting over the remaining wafer allocations. We saw the result in this gen of consoles were you could not get a console for 18 months. While all high tech goods are being made in one factory it will remain the same.

Im in the same position as you OP was going to pick up a 5080 but not impressed with them at all. So will be waiting it out(Springs round the corner and I tend to not really use the PC to gaming when we can all go outside). So im going to wait it out until the super cards come out or just skip this round just like the last one all togther.

I just googled it and the 4 nm plant cost TSMC 20 billion dollars. That is why there is only 1 plant and why new tech has become more expensive.

The article also said production cost was 30 percent more for the new Arizonia fab than Taiwan. So if trump moves all manufacturing back to the states everything will cost more for everyone else.
