I took a punt on a second hand GPU that was advertised with issues thinking I'd give it a go. Off to a great start...

I've been playing some easy on the GPU games recently like GZDoom, Ori and the WotW. And because the card hard locks at stock settings I've been starting low and seeing where exactly issues begin.

Seems to have an issue when activity stops, I had Ori sat running unattended while I was making some food and it was happy enough. But quitting back to the main menu black screen crashed.

Furmark will run at stock but not for long. If I heavily clock down it will run, but after several minutes if I stop it, black screen crash. I've had GPU-Z monitoring running, volts and other power delivery sensors don't do anything weird before a crash.

Tried in two motherboards, and two 750w PSUs, gold and platinum. I've tried reflashing the stock bios over the top. But wondering if there's something particular about stopping intense GPU activity that causes a blip and a crash.

Also tried voltage \ core clock locking.

VRAM temps are low. I've done testing at high fan RPMs and didn't change anything.

RMA isn't an option AFAIK as previous owner 'upgraded thermal pads' to see if that helped. Don't think MSI like that sort of tinkering ;)

Tempted to open it up and look for any physical clues.

Nothing to lose at this point, open her up and see if there's anything obvious. The person may have used pads to thick so a component is overheating and failing that's not making proper contact with the heatsink.

The important question is, can the card mine without crashing?

because of it can mine, you should still be able to resell it for good money to the right buyer

Funny you should ask, I did chuck it at Nicehash for a bit as I assumed it may have been used for mining. Did find some low settings (below 50mh) that seemed to work for 7 hours or so. But then same issue, if you stop it, it crashes.

So I've been trying memory tests like MSI kombustor too, but not artifacting just black screening.

Well, op, youre just going to have to commit on one game, and never stop playing it again.

Id suggest taking the card apart, fully cleaning it with, water/soap if your brave, then alcohol - partly to displace the water-, then heat to fully dry it out. Or ultra sonic.
Check for any bad/corroded looking solder/connections etc.

Send it to me, for... Reasons
Jk

;)

We'll see, have some time tomorrow (today).

@Monkeynut any particular one? I've tried the two on techpowerup that match the model. When I got it MSI live update said it needed an update, which might have been for ReBar support.
