3080 Undervolting

Where all 5 cards FE models? And its impressive that in all 5 the whine was gone after fitting a block. I was put off even bothering to consider water block route for my 3080FE, as I figured no point removing the fan noise if all Im going to hear is whine.

Would be great to find the exact components that emit the whine... but cant think of a way of doing that. Sadly no useful internet result either.

Correct, two of my own 3090FE's, Bro with his 3090FE and work colleagues who I helped with custom loop each a 3080. 4 x EK blocks and 1 x Corsair block.

Your not wrong. Was initially my main reservation but case it ended up in needed it to be water blocked which as you say, normally means things are quiter hence any whine would be more pronounced. Fortunately not been the case, but damm did I had a grin after the whine went away after blocking the card :)

Oh no!

What did you replace it with?

I was kinda out-of-the loop for about 5yrs, my last new-build having been a 4790k & GTX970 system. Back then I don't recall 'coil-whine' being so common? My card didn't whine except at crazy high menu FPS, and neither did any of my friends systems.

This generation, it seems every other card whines! And with the shortages, its impossible to 'just pick the card you want'

Founder's edition 3080ti direct swap.

The MSI suprim x was really bad for coil whine to the point I could hear it whilst gaming.

The 3080ti is a great card in comparison. The founders edition cards IMO are the best cards. The only issue is thermal pads and even then that's only if you have ram issues which many don't. I found vertically mounting the GPU fixed ram from getting too hot.

Founder's cooling is really great in my case. I have 8 fans total. 3 front intake. 2 bottom intake. 1 rear exhaust and then 2 larger 140mm top exhaust.

CPU is cooled using an AIO so the air within the case is pretty cool and the founders just laps in cool fresh air and exhausts all its heat out flawlessly.

AIB cards just seems to move hot air around the inside of a case they aren't designed to move hot air out of the case efficienctly.

I really like both the pass through fan design coupled with another fan used for exhaust. Other companies should learn this year's founders is the best I have ever seen.

I had a 1080 founders and that was terrible it ran very hot and noisey. Worst cooling I've seen on a card so they have come a long way since then and that was only 3-4 years previously.

Oh your not wrong, I love the FE design this time round. They look fantastic. I am really happy with my 90FE in terms of performance, looks, cooling and fan noise.
The fly in the ointment is the coil whine. :( Undervolt helped reduce it a bit. After I re-padded the card, the fans never go above 1100rpm, so its whisper quiet. Rest of my system is too. Means the whine, even in 'reduced' state is the loudest part of the system...

Yeah the founders design with all metal design which acts as a heatsink, pass through fan and then exhaust fan is a massive improvement over blowers of old that were only good for taking apart to be water cooled.

I hated my founders 1080 so much I got rid of it for an MSI 1080 in fact. I then got palit Jetstream 2070 super that was my favourite card until the founders 3080ti.

Agreed, internally my case is cooler during games, the card is comparable temp to my last AIB. However on top of this the card doesnt feel like it will fall apart if I grip it tightly, very solid construction.
