3090 to 5080?

I had been planning on waiting for the 5080 SUPER, but given the delay and current OC offers, does it make sense to get a 5080 now?

It is for gaming only and I would keep the 3090 for now regardless. It seems a 40-70% performance upgrade is possible, which seems decent for £1-1.2k.

What are people's thoughts? If it is to go for a 5080, am I correct in that it is mainly about cooling and noise for the different models? What would be best at the current <£1.2k price point?

MSI 5080 Expert if you can find one, otherwise I'd just go with whatever is cheapest unless you value fan noise profile (have tried FE/Noctua OC) from 5080 selection

Do you have any other use cases for the 3090? They actually command a pretty high price second hand still due to how much VRAM they have.

Sell the bugger and grab a 5080, no harm in it and you probably wont end up spending that much.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £957.98 (includes delivery: £7.99)

If you're glued to Nvidia, I hate to say it but £950 isn't entirely terrible right now.

If you only play a small number of specific games you might be much better off with AMD however, CoD is one example where a £550 9070XT will Rival a £2000-3000 Nvidia 5090.

I sold my 3090 and moved to a 9070XT for no cost. Was a great move tbh, nice performance boost, more efficient. Only thinng I missed was RTX HDR.

The 5080 is terrible value overall, may aswell go for the 5090FE, although stock looks to be very infrequent. AIB 5090 pricing is crazy, didn't know things had got that rough.

You'd need a miracle to find one in stock, and in relation to the 5080's most review outlets use the base FE model.

Most non-FE are arguably overbuilt and will boost a fair chunk more if you play around, so you can slap on another 10-20% performance depending on the game and silicone lottery, more with some tweaking and luck. The most offensive thing with the product is the shockingly low amount of VRAM on what is essentially their flagship current gen consumer GPU -- and no I do not count the 5090 as it's blatantly a Halo product much like the Titans were back in the day. Nvidia could have easily slapped a 384bit bus on the 5080 with 24gb of VRAM much like the 3090 and it would have been a far more impressive product, and actually worth the asking price at launch.

I still think a 5080 is a poor value proposition compared to a 5070ti, slightly faster and a lot more expensive. 5080 is trading pretty heavily on the 80 series moniker imho. It's more like a 5070 Ti super at best.

nV thought they pulled off a masterstroke by offering a severely cut-down 80-named card. We all knew from Ampere where they were going with model shrinkflation and that the 5080 is actually a 70-tier card. It should really be called the 5070 (non-ti or super).

As it stands, it's very bad value. It's 10-15% faster than its predecessor. 9070xt, it's closest contemporary rival, is also within 10-15% in performance... and it costs 40% less.

I'd be looking at a 9070xt, or a used 4080 super. Notable performance bump from the 3090 and not the bad value proposition that Is regret.

Thanks for all the advice.

I will probably keep the 3090, as I am 'trying' to learn a bit of coding and I understand the higher vram is more useful for python etc.

For my sins, I do play cod. Tends to mainly be FPS and strategy games, so Total War games and then things like Arc Raiders.

Sounds as though a 9070xt or 5070ti are the sensible plays for now. If I could find a 5080/5090 FE then I would consider it, but the 5090 cards in particular are just ridiculous. My concern with trying to get a used 4080/4090 is just paying out for something second hand and how protected (or not) you are if something goes wrong.

Late to this party but yeah, I'd stick with the 3090 for now. I moved from a 3080Ti to a 5080 and it's obviously faster, but the biggest improvement for me has been the quality of the DLSS and frame gen. Love it or hate it, it's very very good when used appropriately. This is all at 4K though. If I wasn't an idiot and stuck with 1440p I'd probably still have my 3080Ti and be just fine.

All that, plus 24GB of vram will see you good in the future, whether it's for local AI or on the second hand market.

I can't see any situation where a 5080 justifies it's price over a 9070XT. If you're set on one so be it but it looks about the worse card for everything at the moment. Stingy RAM allocation, not much better than 5070TI/9070XT and vastly over priced. Obv a 5090 is overpriced but that is a different story. No matter what my gaming needs I would never consider a 5080 today it gives nothing. A £600 9070XT is the only decent deal currently available.

Certainly not set on a 5080, does seem like a 9070XT is the only card worth considering at the moment. Even then a 20-30% upgrade doesn't really inspire me. I'm guessing it is impossible to locate a 5090 FE these days? I probably should have made an effort a few months ago using stock checkers.

A 5090FE is the best choice but getting hold of one anywhere near MSRP will be near impossible, worth a go though.

I'll try the stock finder channels but might be best just sitting and waiting for now then.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, much appreciated.

In terms of 'value' I'd think it would be 9070XT > 5070ti > 5080, and with performance more like 5080 > 5070ti/9070XT (9070XT and 5070ti are very close/can swap depending on the title I think), so depends if there are specific titles or tools you use which favour nvidia over amd, and ultimately how much of a premium you're willing to pay for the extra performance.

Have been thinking the same, not sure to go 5080 from a 3090 or stick with a 3090 or go 5090 but expensive, not sure when we will see a 60 series, decisions to be made...

Also in the same boat with a 3090 and looking for an upgrade.

The OCD in me doesn't like going down to a 80 tier card despite it being significantly faster haha
