Just a few shots with new Canon 30D and sigma 50-500.
all 100% crops low light windy and dam cold and a long way off. All @500m

Like i said poor light very windy and a long way off. Here are some slightly better ones. Plus they were very under exsposed so did well to get what I did..Again 100% crops

A few points worth thinking about

Remember the camera meters the scene as 18% grey

Do you use both focus and exposure lock on the shutter button? If you do then you have probably locked the exposure off the sky. Use custom function 4.3 to move focus to the * button and exposure to the shutter button. This will allow you to focus without locking exposure until the shot is taken.

Tracking a small fast bird using spot metering (3% of the frame) accurately is going to take a lot of practice.

@500mm in high winds hand held is a bit of a b@gger. It was just a small spot in the sky to the naked eye but it goes to show you can salvage some thing out of shooting in raw they wont make Time life magazine but worth it just for the rare sight of a Buzzard hunting and a real wild one at that.

I've just got the Beta update for RSE 2006 for the Canon 30D. I cant get on with the Canon software.
