318IS Track Car? Nickxx?

22.7 kg a piece

The corbeus including frames are 9.8 kg each, giving me a total saving of 25.8 kg.

Not drastic, but enough to push me up to 196 bhp/tonne :)

Seats in your S Class are probably around 33kg each. Are they cast iron? :p

The seats in my S-Class are 18-way adjustable including inflatable bolsters and lumbar support, heated and cooled, leather etc etc. These BMW seats have none of that :p

Still, at 22.7KG you can colour me surprised! Decent weight saving and 196bhp/tonne is very good :D

I thought about stripping out my Clio, but my intentions to get some sprints prevent it :(

The best I can do is swap the seats for buckets, but that would come with a need for at least a rear cage, probably offsetting the weight saving :/

It would be bloody cool to get it down under 1 tonne though.

The whole 'stripping means buckets, buckets mean harnesses, harnesses mean roll cage or certain death, roll cage means ££££' argument that comes up on CS all the time really bugs me.

You can strip the Clio and fit lighter seats that still allow you to use the normal seatbelts while still making a decent weight saving. You only need to loose 90kg to get the Clio under a tonne Mike.

Which lighter seats are going to allow me to use a normal seatbelt? You can't really use one with any bucket set.

Still, if you're going to start doing it, you may as well do it properly.

Rear cage is around £400, harnesses maybe £100 and I already have some seats that are in date. The front portion of the cage can be added later for £350, but at least the rear would put me in good standing for buckets and harnesses.

90KG is a lot to lose when you need to keep all interior trim in place (although carpets and sound deadening can be lost). Best chance is swapping front seats for some really light items, ditching aircon, polycarb the rear window and dumping the carpets/sound deadening.

this thread is awesome. good work to those that are stripping out their cars for the track, i must admit I love the e36's and stripped out like that they handle very well!

Bought myself a 328i today. No tax or mot so perfect for what I need. Comes with Coilovers, M3 Bumpers, M3 Replica Wheels and a few other bits. Gave £560 for it.

Heres it when I got her home:

Started removing the front end ready to remove the engine and box in one go. Can't wait to get the red BMW back on the road with this motor! It flies!

Replacing the alloys too? reps will be heavier and less sound structurally surely?

If any of you guys with a 328i need the less restrictive 325i manifold then send me a trust email as I know where you can get one :)

The problem with the standard seats are the seatbelt clips are on the seat. When i had the sparco in the drivers side, i had to use the passenger side clip. Most of the sparco FG seats are 7-9kg each. Bits i've taken off the car adds up as follows (roughly)

2 x Front seats = 60kg
Rear seats = 24kg
Interior panels = 9kg
seat belts + mechs = 6.5kg
sound deadening + foam = 13kg

Thought i'd update this now as ive managed to do the conversion. Went smoothly enough and only ran into one problem when I forgot to connect one power cable up (doh!) Haven't given it a spin in the red car yet, but will tomorrow. Anyways, heres some pictures

Old 1.8 Engine Removed :D

This thread is bad for my house savings - I've missed my 328i since I got rid and often thought how good it would be just stripped out with some decent suspension and rubber on. Given you can pick one up taxed and mot'd for £6-700 quid it's awfully, awfully tempting - especially now all I have is a fwd diesel motor :(

Right bit of an update. Didnt get much done last weekend as I went to the Autosport show, where I ordered some new seats. Ones turned up for the passenger side, drivers sid hasnt yet.

Roll-Cage turned up so Ive been fitting that, its a pig of a job and the dash has got to be removed. Just got to finish off bolting it in place now and making sure its 100% secure.

Anyways I got some crappy pics so here they are:

Ill grab some more pictures today once ive finished potching with the cage, the front halfs in just I didnt get any pictures.

Also bought an M50 manifold which should release a few HP! Then get her remapped and away to go!
