Hi all,

I'm fed up of waiting for an untethered JB release for IOS5 so just going with the tethered one.
I've JB my iPhone before so I know what to do but just trying to get IOS5 installed on my iPhone 4 through iTunes is proving difficult due to a 3194 error, googling this it seems a very common problem and it can easily be fixed just altering a few things in the hosts file. Unfortunately I've tried each fix and I'm still getting the error (when Apple tried verifying with the server after the software has been extracted)

Not sure what to do, I suspect wiping the device and starting a fresh won't rectify anything.

Any ideas?

Cheers

have you been pointing at other severs other than apples ? when you have donew previous jailbreaks ?
like sauriks server ( cydia )

have a look in

C - windows - system32 - drivers - etc, then open the host file, delete all the hosts that are entered if there are any, next time it SHOULD connect to apple servers with no issue

or follow this

Yep first guide I did, I've looked at loads of hosts config none have worked.

I do have one #host in there I'll remove it and see if that makes any difference.

yeah delete the lot
it will find itself when it trys next time

Still nothing. I know i had this problem where I couldn't revert back from 4.3.5 to 4.3.3 but I didn't think I'd have an issue upgrading.

I finally got it to work, I honestly have no idea how.

5.0.1 is on there anyway, now trying to JB it is a nightmare, using redsn0w, it goes through all the usual actions of a JB, it worked first thing then I can't get Cydia back, tried booting in tethered mode, re-jailbreaking it etc. Doing my head in :(

Also I have no App Store, whats that all about?!

is there an untethered for ios5?

No just semi-tethered.

In fact, I have no messages, app store, mail icons, just my downloaded apps.

Is this normal for IOS5?! I'm pretty sure the thing isn't JB as there is no Cydia app in sight but now i'm not sure if that's hidden somehow too with these other missing apps.

Absolutely not. Should have all the stock apps that you have always had.

Sounds like something has really gone wrong mate. I would personally do a full DFU restore and start afresh.

this is a new one on me - does this mean i only plug the cable in half-way when I boot it up ?
It means you can boot up again... (this is where I can't remember and wont test it because I'm using my iPad and not got my laptop with me)
But you won't be able to use jailbroken services afterwards

Yep from memory it allows you to boot untethered and allows you to use Apple apps apart from Safari due to how it sandboxes files. But obviously won't be able to use any JB tweaks/apps.
