somethings just dawn on me, there 32 and 64 bit CPUs, 32 and 64 bit partitions (FAT32 and NTFS) and 32 and 64 bit o/s. do these affect each other, so can you install a 64 bit o/s on a 32 bit partition with a 32 bit CPU or am i asking a daft question ?

daft question. you can install 32bit on a 64bit as pretty much all of it has backwards capability built in. But you can't install 64bit on a 32bit system.

But if you buy a new cpu it will be 64bit so you might as well run a 64bit OS, especially as there's no (well next to nothing) problems with drivers or software know.

A 64bit O/S requires a 64bit CPU. But a 32bit O/S will work fine on either a 64bit or 32bit CPU.

NTFS/Fat32 work on all combinations afaik.

Ive used FAT32 on x64 Linux, XP, and Vista.
Used NTFS on x32, Linux, XP and Vista.

They do try and confuse you don't they?

ok got it only CPU and o/s matter.

i thought the bit amount of the parition type was what limited the max parition and file size ?
