32 bit & 64 bit

You can only have about 3.5 gb max of ram in 32bit.
64b is supposedly a bit faster with 64 bit apps.

Imo 32 bit is dead tech, get win7 x64 or vista x64 and if anything wouldn't work, you use virtualbox...

ALWAYS opt for 64bit if your hardware is capable, which it most likely is. Think of it as a 32bit operating system with the benefit of running 64bit.

but what about games, software and drivers? are they all 64bit compatible now?

That's the only thing holding me back is compatibility

All 32Bit software will run on 64bit O/S. As I said, think of Vista/W7 64Bit as 32Bit software with the ability to handle 64Bit code as well. All Vista/W7 64Bit does is tell the CPU what kind of code it's going to execute, whether 32Bit or 64BIt.

The only time you get compatibility problems is when a game uses advanced copy protection techniques involving installing drivers etc, but in all these cases fixes are available or you just download the latest game patch (which you should be doing anyway.)
One of the requirements for Vista and W7 is when companies submit drivers to Microsoft they must supply both 32Bit and 64Bit drivers otherwise they do not get digitally signed by Microsoft so you will not have driver issues.

the rule of thumb for 64Bit is if your hardware is capable of running it (2Gb minimum ram and a 64Bit CPU) you have no reason to be using 32Bit. All 3 of the PCs in my house run 64Bit Vista HP and I, and many others on here, have not had a single problem. To cut a long story short, go for 64Bit and don't look back!

There's no way absolutely everything will be compatible, but unless you're running some ancient or particularly badly supported hardware/software you're unlikely to experience any problems.
