My system is stuck in the stone age running windows XP, so i want a copy of windows 7 but i dont know witch is best 32 bit or 64 bit?

Is there any noticeable difference in the way it works?
Is there any programs that 64 bit will not run, that would be used in day to day web surfing and gaming?

I have 4gb of ran and would like to use 8gb with 64bit but if using 64bit will make life hard for my wife and son when using the pc i will stick to 32bit.

Plz reply fast as windows 7 is on offer :P
Thanks Dave

64 bit will enable you to use ALL the ram you have currently installed. Plus, you can use the same key to install either 64 or 32 bit. Get 64-bit. No reason for 32bit tbqh. Windows 7 is far far better than XP. I hated the new taskbar at first, but now love it!

Assuming your CPU is 64 bit, go for x64.

It's difficult to tell which version you're running unless you know where to look. Old 16 bit programs and programs with 16 bit installers won't work but I doubt you're using any.

We've got two laptops and a desktop all running windows 7 64 bit, the only thing I've found that doesn't work is the update software for the road angle plus we have, but I just fire up the old desktop with xp on. Everything else works great, so I'd definitely recommend 64 bit.

Get 64-bit, there's no noticeable difference in usage but you'll get a performance difference if you have +4gb ram and will future proof your o/s.

Unfortunately that article has been lifted out of the context of the book. That particular section refers to the 32 bit version of Windows 7, not 64. :)

Microsoft Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate provide a licensed virtual Windows XP Professional 32 bit environment which will run within 64 bit Windows 7 providing an environment of incompatible legacy applications, including 16 bit applications compatible with Windows XP 32 bit. Applications installed in Windows XP Mode are automatically published to the Windows 7 environment where they can be launched as though installed natively.

16 bit Windows compatible applications are unable to run within 64 bit Windows as the subsystem Windows on Windows in which 16 bit applications run within a 32 bit Windows environment is not included in 64 bit Windows. This component is present in the 32 bit Windows XP Professional environment within Windows XP Mode. 64 bit versions of Windows do include Windows on Windows 64 bit or WOW64 through which most 32 bit applications run.
