Hi All,

Silly question for you all, can you definately use a standard 32bit PCI device in a double length PCI-X 64bit slot?

Reason is that I'm trying to find a reasonably compact rack mount pc that will take a specialist multichannel sound card and ISDN terminal adapter that are both PCI devices.

Dell are trying to sell me a Precision R5400 Rack WS machine fitted with a riser that gives me 1 x PCI and 1 x PCI-X slots, but they can't seem to confirm whther that 1 PCI-X slot will happily take a 32 bit PCI card.

I'd be more than happy with a bog standard off the shelf server if that gave me the option of taking 2 x standard form factor, full length PCI cards if anyone can suggest any that offer that these days.

Many thanks for any help.

It'll depend on the voltages supported by the card you want to use.

The PCI-X slot will be +3.3V and keyed as such.

If the 32bit PCI card you want to use supports dual voltages (+3.3V and +5V) then it should work. If the PCI card as two gaps in the edge connector then it should be dual voltage and fit. If it has a single gap in the edge connector then it will be +5V only and won't physically fit in the slot.

Hi Bremen1874,

Many thanks for that, hopefully either the ISDN TA or Sound card would support 3.3v, I'll check it out on Monday.

Ta very,
