32-bit vs 64-bit

my only quarm is no fully working mkv 64bit codec for 64bit media centre

for this reason i'm changing back to 32bit for the time being on my media centre pc

ALL my other software works fine

The issues with Media Centre and codecs is not a problem for me. I use Vista Codec Pack with 64 bit tools. The problem with Media centre I have, is caused by the Nvidia drivers which were released after 163.75. I either get smudges of black on screen with 174.xx or with 169.xx I get choppy frames going back and forth, 171.xx seems ok apart from random black screens and BSODs. I have given up on media centre and only use Media player. x64 media player is fine.

Using 163.75 and no problems with Video but cant play many of my games.

virtualbox is a good alternative too, it doesn't have the huge networking options that vmware has, but it's perfect for internet use on it..

Turbophonic, by default the windows media player in x64 is the 32bit one, hence no problems

Set Noise Reduction to 1 in your nvidia options

Notice quite a few people running 64-bit Vista with only 2GB of memory - err, why!?

Vista x86 really needs 4GB to perform properly, let alone the 64-bit version.

my girlfriend's comp is on x64 with only 2gb of ram. it doesnt run slower on x64 then it did on x86.. i did some quick tests.
plus it allows people the luxery of later on buying more ram and not having to buy a new version of vista.

Lies. 2GB is plenty for Vista 32-bit. But yes most OcUK'ers will opt for 4GB because they want a nice big Superfetch cache :)

Yes x64 requires more but not loads more. It really depends how many x64 applications you use - which is probably "not many" at the moment.
