I was planning a pc build with windows 7 64 bit... but i hit a snag while looking at the software that was required. Its 32bit there is no 64bit and never will be.. and it wont work on 64bit. so accepting this fate... and removing the 16gb RAM and replacing with 4gb. will there be a large performance hit from using AutoCAD , photoshop (aside from the ram limit).. the current pc is an old triple core athlon with 4gb.. the replacement which is still made from parts i have is an AMD A8-5600 with 16gb DDR3, 120gb SSD.. personally im thinking its not worth while.. or to just put the SSD in the old PC

What's the program your trying to use? Most 32 bit programs still work on 64 bit windows, the only issue I've had is with 16 bit programs but even then there are workarounds.

32 runs on 64, but not vice versa.

Try running the setup in compatability mode if it throws up an error.

ok .. the program is called Architect 2000 its a bolt to AutoCAD. i have spoken to the firm directly, there is no way it will run on 64bit. it will crash to desktop on opening

i appreciate the help guys.. but you have missread the post (well i could have give you more info)

The software that wont work is ARCHITECT 2000 NOT AUTOCAD 2000.

This software is running with AutoCAD 2009 which runs fine on 64bit os.

Run the Architect 2000 + AutoCad 2009 in a 32-bit Virtual machine? Keep 64Bit windows for everything else?

Seems really silly hamstringing modern hardware and OS for a 15 year old program.
