32" LCD and a false wall - how?

Do you have to wave your willy? :(

Thanks for your, well, 'helpful?' comment, hardly willy waving is it, more of a GENUINE question? being that the room that it's going in is an extension that isn't made out of bricks. Go and take your 'accusations' elsewhere, they aint welcome in my thread. hey, here's an idea, go in the motors forum and tell whoever has bought a new car a 'willy waver, or maybe even go in the photography forum, and tell the new one with a new dSLR whos asking for help that they are willy waving

as to everyone else, thanks for your replies, is there anyway of finding out where the batons are without ripping the plasterboard off?

If you just attach to wall, it will eventually give way.

Not all plasterboard will give way in this way.

There is a plasterboard, called Denseshield, made by Knauff. I have used this in my storage cupboard and have hung some very heavy shelving with no problems. This plasterboard is 15mm thick and is designed especially for hanging things on.

The timber studs in the wall will be either 400mm or 600mm apart. Bolt your wallplate to them and you've nothing to worry about. Try fixing the plate to plasterboard and you'll quickly find your new TV on the floor and bloody big hole in the wall. Denseshield is very expensive compared to standard platerboard and it's unlikely any housebuilder will use it unless it's a self-build.

Trust me, I'm a joiner. :D

just been upstairs to the room armed with a drill and a 4mm drill bit, after many random holes, the conclusion: the batons are 45cm apart, and not where i want them to be. there's one in the centre of where i planned the tv to be, then 2 45cm away either side, which will be too big for the telly, guess my only solution will be to take the plasterboard off and put new batons on?

Aaaah yes, but its such a good plasterboard to use. :)

I think I paid, per unit square, about 20% more than the cheaper plasterboard so the cost wasnt that prohibitive. As you said though, its highly unlikely that his wall is made using Denseshield.

What if you take a square/rectangular piece of strong wood and drill it into 2 upright battens. Then once, it is fixed firmly, you can position your fixing bracket anywhere into the wood? Of course this would mean that there would be a block of wood, 45cm wide, protruding from the wall. The TV should hide this though.

Taking down plasterboard in the way you describe isnt an easy job if you've not done it before. After replacing the plasterboard you will need to replaster and then repaint the new wall. You sure you want to do this?

You could take the plasterboard off and drill and fit wood blocks inbetween the batons were needed then plaster back over and then drill the mount holes in the wood, hey presto your tv is hanging.

Bit of a pain but sometimes needs doing :'(

EDIT: sunama has a good idea too, but it is a bit of a pain tbh... id rather just be able to screw it to the wall :P
