This might be a silly question but...

I see many people going for 3600MHz, in many cases to pair with the new Ryzen 5600x. However, my understanding is that the 5600x works at 3200MHz.

What am I missing? Is it potential overclock that allows the CPU to make use of the higher memory speed?

3600 has been marketed as the 'sweet spot' but if you have good timing 3200 ram you won't see a difference and if / when it becomes an issue you'll have bottlenecks elsewhere in the system.

If you got 3600 CL16 or 3200 CL14 you would probably have a better chance of running the 3600 at CL14 than the 3200 at 3600.
My 3600 CL16 is running at 3800 CL14. My guess is a 3200 CL14 kit would struggle running at 3800

Could always go 4000 / 4200 + at CL18 or higher, then lower frequency and tighten timings.

I think timing are much more important so say 3200 at CL14 > 3600 at CL16. I went for a 4400hz kit of patriot viper then got it running at 3600 14cl to try get the best of both worlds!
