Recently replaced my old Primera GT with a MPV. Our 2nd car, a runabout, is a 99 Micra. Other than oil changes and brake pads its never needed anything else done to it. Not bad in 10yrs. Some might **** them off, but when driven hard they are fun to drive. Anyway regardless However now at 66k it needs new struts, and decent tyres all around. Who knows what next. Rather than spending money on it, I'm thinking of picking up something else. Something with 4drs and a decent would be more practical. So I've seen a very clean 98 323f decent spec (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_Lantis) but know nothing about them. What are they like?

One of my friends has a 1.5, it's suprisingly gutsy and he hasn't had any problems with it since he's had it, so they seem just as reliable as any other Mazda. The 1.8 will be the same engine that is in the MX5.

I'd get the 1.8 or 2 litre, as the engine won't be as overworked. I had a 2 litre which I got rid of at 55k miles. Nothing had ever gone wrong with it. I've heard of mileages over 200k for the 2 litre - they're all but indestructible unless you drive like an idiot. The 2 litre is thirsty though - about 24-26mpg.

Step-grandad has one of these, absolutely bulletproof. Clutch replacement was fairly expensive I seem to remember though.

My family has owned a 2L SE for about 6 years, nowt serious has gone wrong mechanically/electrically but the dashboard is starting to 'creak' when going over speed humps, or poor condition roads.. then again its a 10+ year old car.

Yes, the V6 is thirsty. Usually don't get more than 250 miles to a tank driving in urban areas.. or it could be my heavy right foot :o

Go to www.club323f.com to ask the owners there on anything you want to know.

I had the v6 as a courtesy car a while back, it was definitely nippy for such a small engine and convinced me that 6 cylinders was definitely the way forward.

However the garage in question used to buy cheap sheds as courtesy cars, it came with instructions to put oil in at the start of every trip and after a few days it broke when one of the cam pulleys exited through the cam cover while I was on the M6, meaning I had to spend a night in Coventry. This means that I now associate the 323f with Coventry and thus could never buy one.

But year, dont let the fact that I got given a knackered one put you off. It was a great little car when it worked, apart from the fact that it stank of fags and had no radio.
