I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to 32bit and 64bit o/s's, is 64bit backwards compatible with 32bit applications?

in short, is it worth getting 64bit over the 32bit version?

thanks for any replies

As Bloodwolf pointed out you can run 32bit apps. The only issue I see on a 64bit OS is drivers. Now this wont be a problem with your 'bigger' brands such as Nvidia, ATI and creative, but may be a problem with devices such as mobile phones. My friend was unable to connect his K750 on Windows 64 and has not found a solution to this day. I'm assuming Vista 64 bit will require seperate drivers as the previous 64bit windows did.

Edit.
A current issue for gamers is the Copy protective software that some games are using. eg.. fahrenheit will not run on 64 due to this.

Vista x64 runs all your x86 applications at full speed.

The only difference is that it needs 64 bit drivers.
